Worldwide reference

Every EPSG coordinate system, country by country

5 860 current systems across 238 countries and territories. Pick a country, or search for a code (2154, 26191, 32629…) or a name (Lambert, UTM 30, Merchich): every page gives the full definition and opens in the converter, Carte and MawCAD.

Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and France also have a detailed guide, with reference cities computed zone by zone.

What is an EPSG code?

The EPSG registry, kept by IOGP, numbers every coordinate system: 4326 for WGS 84 latitude/longitude, 2154 for Lambert-93, 26191 for the Lambert North Morocco zone. GIS software, GNSS receivers and PostGIS databases (SRID) understand each other through that number.

A projected system (Lambert, UTM, Gauss-Krüger…) gives X and Y in metres on a plane; a geographic system gives latitudes and longitudes on an ellipsoid. Each rests on a datum: moving between them takes the transformation EPSG publishes, which we give for every code.

The 5 860 definitions come from the PROJ database. Every formula was replayed in the site's conversion engine and compared with PROJ to the centimetre, both ways and across its whole area of use: 5 837 systems pass and convert straight in your browser, in Carte as in the converter; the others rest on methods PROJ itself does not compute and keep their reference page.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the EPSG code of my coordinate system?

Open your country's page: national systems come first, projected then geographic. If you know the name (Lambert, UTM 29N, Merchich), type it into the search; a .prj file or GIS metadata often gives the exact name already.

What is the difference between EPSG:4326 and EPSG:3857?

4326 is WGS 84 latitude and longitude (degrees): what a GPS gives. 3857 is the Web Mercator projection of online maps, in metres, distorted far from the equator: it is not for measurements.

Can I convert coordinates in any of these 5 860 systems?

Yes for almost all: choose “All EPSG systems…” in the converter, Carte or MawCAD, then your country. The few methods the browser engine does not reproduce to the centimetre stay documented but are not offered.

Why do some pages say there is no transformation to WGS 84?

Because EPSG publishes only a correction grid for that datum, or nothing. Conversion then works on the ellipsoid alone and can be off by tens of metres: tie your work to known common points.

How do I make the .prj file of a shapefile?

On the system's page, “Download the .prj” gives the WKT in ESRI format: rename it like your .shp. Carte's Shapefile exports write it on their own.
